Planning ahead: Here’s a few tips for buying a lawnmower for next year

Although the lawn cutting season is past, you might be looking at replacing your old lawnmower or getting a bigger one to make the job easier on yourself. Even if you’re not shopping through what’s still left now, you can start thinking about what you’ll need when the grass starts to go green and grow again. Remember buying a lawnmower is a big purchase and now is a good time to get the information together to make an informed decision in the Spring.

It stands to reason that the type and size of the lawn you have will dictate the mower that you buy. Push mowers that are gasoline powered need a bit of muscle to operate so you should be looking at a relatively flat surface here usually under a ¼ acre in size. Look for three different methods of looking after your grass clippings with these mowers and for the most part whether you choose mulching, bagging or side discharge is a personal matter.

Bigger lawns mean bigger machines and once you get to the ½ acre size of lawn and over you should be looking at a riding mower to handle your needs. With a cutting swath of 32 to 62 inches, in many cases these machines can make small work of an area that would be a nightmare for a push mower. Make sure to shop for the features that will make the job easier for you like power steering and a dial to adjust the cutting height as needed. Compare engine specifications as well to make sure you’re getting the most for your money.
